Why Do So Many Think Agnostics Cannot Be Atheists?

Or vice-versa?

This was originally posted to my Tumblr, but I figured I’d post it here, as well.

Dictionary.com definitions:

atheist:

a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.

theist:

  1. the belief in one God as the creator and ruler of the universe, without rejection of revelation.
  2. belief in the existence of a god or gods

agnostic:

  1. a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.
  2. a person who denies or doubts the possibility of ultimate knowledge in some area of study.

gnostic:

  1. pertaining to knowledge.
  2. possessing knowledge, esp. esoteric knowledge of spiritual matters.
  3. (initial capital letter) pertaining to or characteristic of the Gnostics.
  4. (initial capital letter) a member of any of certain sects among the early Christians who claimed to have superior knowledge of spiritual matters, and explained the world as created by powers or agencies arising as emanations from the Godhead

So as you can see by these definitions, an atheist can be agnostic, because at the core of agnosticism is a healthy dose of skepticism. Skepticism is crucial to any realistic approach to the world, and a major part of why most atheists consider themselves atheists.

You could also argue the reverse: an atheist denies the existence of a god or gods, the agnostic denies the possibility of ultimate knowledge of that fact. Therefore, the agnostic could be considered atheist.

Others have made this point better than I, but still I feel it necessary to bring it up. If you would like to learn more, visit:

Why Not?

I was having a conversation the other day with an acquaintance of mine and the subject of my atheism came up. I won’t go into details, but I was told that I shouldn’t advertise the fact that I’m an atheist. Now since this conversation was in a professional capacity, I was forced to[...]

Why You Should Blog

(yes, you!) As everyday people, we find ourselves constantly under attack. Every organization, from government to corporations to utilities, is trying to get us to behave a certain way. If we let these very powerful (and sometimes frightening) entities do it, they will push us until we find we no lo[...]

Divided We Fall

I have been feeling increasingly uncomfortable about the schisms developing in this country between the left and the right. It seemed to have reached a fever pitch years ago, during the height of the Bush administration. But in the last two months following the inauguration of Barack Obama, this sch[...]

I Won The Lottery!

Well being someone who is quite active on the internet, I have come to expect my fair share of spam. However, this latest iteration of it is kind of disturbing, and actually when I think about, also humorous. Here is a copy of an email I received not 10 minutes ago: [...]

New Drink!

Hey so recently I discovered that a bakery in the food court at my building sells Arnold Palmers (1/2 iced tea, 1/2 lemonade). Long story short, I’m hooked. But in my neverending quest to turn every drink in to a cocktail, I have come up with (hopefully) a brand-new libation. Are you ready? Are [...]
